Creating a Mood Board from research

Updated: Mar 21, 2023

From your research, are there any images, stories or ideas that you would like to incorporate into your Film Poster?

  • Make a list and show examples of images using a Mood board. You can use Canva for this. Then explain what you want to show on your poster underneath.

  • You may have more than one idea as you work on this or develop your creative ideas, this is Distinction level process and I would encourage you to think what more could I do to make my work better? and show your journey and creative process.

Make sure you download your images and save them onto your computer into a folder so that you can use them on Photoshop later

Also have the link to the image save using collections or put the link in this blog.

High quality Photos for your base image:

These are a couple of creative examples from my Mood Board example, for Behind the Door

Mood Board 1:

My Mood Board 1: explained

My main image location is an old door that is distressed with peeling paint and muted colours. It already has some interesting lighting and a ghostly image that I am going to enhance using Photoshop adjustments. I have used texture and a grunge type old style text for the title and the tagline. I am going to download some PNG's and use them as overlays to increase the narrative imagery as there will be broken glass and bullet holes in the walls. I have included an old newspaper in the foreground of the image. This will be the Enigma (the puzzle or hook for the film) Why is the Newspaper there? I am also going to add atmosphere by making the image of the old house and door darker and add some fog or smoke across the Tag Line this will add the mystery and supernatural element to the horror. The Tag line I am using will be the plot of the film, Once you see it, it's too late. I will also add the Logo for Netflix and the date the film can be streamed on my poster.

My Mood Board 2: explained

After feedback and looking at my first Mood board I have had some more creative thoughts about the film poster. I what I wanted to tell my audience about my film and be clear on the style of genre that is Stalker/Slasher. I have included Blood this time as I wanted to be clear that his was a slasher horror film and blood is a central element to this. I have kept my colour palette muted black, red and grey so that the red stands out and I like the idea of the old newspaper being a clue to something that is haunted this house from the past. Ripped up paper and photographs gives us a clue that this might have happened in the 1970's. This being a Narrative device of enigma the puzzle that makes us ask questions? I want the Title of the film to have a 3 D style using texture and shadows, I also want the whole poster to feel old and vintage, I like using a mixture of textures and creating a collage effect, the sticky tape and the paper.

Updated Mood Board 3: A family ripped apart?

While I have been working on this I have had another thought for my poster, I might put the happy family images into poloraid photos from the past and do a similar effect on my final poster? This would include some Binary Opposition about the nature of a family torn apart by the killer. Past and Present, Life and Death, Good and Evil.
