Workshop on The Umbrella Academy

Updated: Nov 26, 2023

  1. Overview of the programme series (100-200 words) The Umbrella Academy - Rotten Tomatoes (When it started, what it is about, Genre, popularity, reviews)

  2. Talk about the character Teaser posters for Season 1. Identify what you see and what they are communicating to the audience. Show a couple of the posters. Netflix Presents: “The Umbrella Academy” Promotional Posters | PiercingMetal.com

  • Using the Key Terms (Identify, explain how this is used) eg. Tag line uses an adjective to describe the character, this links to the props, gaze and gesture of the image on the posters. Explain at least 3 of the Key Terms below for the posters.

An example might be the character who plays Super Ordinary is shown with the prop of a violin which is a classical and some might say quite boring instrument to play. She engages the viewer by looking directly at you from the poster. While the character of Super Evil has her hands on her hips defying you to take her on. It is a forceful gesture and her prop is a character head and you wonder why she is carrying this? Having the combination of the words SUPER EVIL with a head being presented in this way makes you as a viewer of the poster feel uneasy.

Workshop: Tutorial Create your own Poster can't slow it down (tumblr.com)

Photography (Take a photograph in the studio or use a suitable image from the internet )

  • Show your photography, print screen the gallery from your computer.

On going review of your skills

  • Say what you hoped to achieve with your character, How you chose your gesture, prop and the Super word you have used.

  • What set up did you use to take the photograph? (Studio, how many lights?, white background/Wall, DSLR)

Photoshop: You can talk about how you put together your Poster in Photoshop

Print screen your workspace and then talk about what you did. Go through the points.

  • Background Image (Opened this in Photoshop)

  • Character cutout (select subject)

  • Pixels per Inch (ppi) move and transform (scale)

  • Super Adjective and Number (Impact Font) Colour, size of Font used

  • Layer Panel placement of layers to get the result. What is the Layer panel

Example of how to begin is below. For the first three points.
To create my Umbrella Academy style poster I downloaded and opened my background image in Photoshop. I then opened my character photograph and used select subject to cut out the character from the background. To get the character the right size I moved them into my background document and used Transform and Scale to get the character the right size for the poster. My image was very large as it was of a better quality than the background image. My photoshop area was 72 ppi and the photograph was 300ppi.
